Try and Don’t Try

A few days ago a friend showed me how to get to a sacred American site where ceremony  sometimes happens. It’s not a long hike, but it is a place for seekers as  there is not a real trail or markings.

Yesterday I wanted to see if I could find it on my own. I looked and looked for the hint of the turn off point, going back and forth on the same stretch but was disappointed. I finally  decided to trek across the Stone Mountain terrain to find a quiet spot to sit for a moment.

After a bit, I thought I saw a “spot” just a little higher up. It got a little steep, then steeper.... I looked back and realized that going down was looking as risky as continuing up.

It was one of those moments. My heart was actually beating a little harder and I had to steady my nerves. I told myself to take care because I really like my body.

At my summit I had to shimmy flat on my back under a fence. On the other side of the fence was a sign posted saying “Danger” and “you can be prosecuted for crossing the fence”. Oops. I was near the top of Stone Mountain.

Today after work, I stopped by Stone Mountain for a short walk. I started down my usual reliable trail (going in the opposite direction of the previous day’s attempt , btw)

At one point I decided to go up the side of the rock and sit for a minute. Up and up, then I saw people on a little trail and decided to follow that trail. At first satisfied with following the trail, I then had the bright idea of paralleling the trail, just a little higher.

Decision time, time to start back, but first a little sit down:) I turned around to look up the mountain and, voila, there was the sacred spot a few feet behind me.

What a fun world I live in!!
